A bouquet for Bisi Fayemi
Tumblr media
By Rt Hon Hakeem Jamiu     Bisi Fayemi who turns 56 today is the wife of Ekiti State Governor and this is her second tenure as the first lady of Ekiti State but that is not all. She is such a rare breed that needs to be celebrated at every given opportunity. She is talented with brains and beauty. She is an internationally recognised gender specialist, policy, women and child rights advocate and an intellectual of note. She recently bagged the 2018 Zik Prize for Humanitarian Leadership alongside the former Ghanaian President, John Mahama, immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, who won in the political leadership category.   Also the governors of Akwa Ibom State, Udom Emmanuel and his Niger State counterpart, Abubakar Sanni-Bello, emerged winners in the good governance award category. Before her recent Zik award, she was on April 5, 2011, presented with the David Rockefeller Bridging Leadership Award, one of the most prestigious awards in the field of philanthropy but narrowly missed the African Leadership Hunger Prize Award in 2008 when she was nominated. With the Rockefeller Award, Mrs. Fayemi joined the rank of past winners such as former South African President, Nelson Mandela, Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Sheela Pattel, Fazle Hasan and Queen Rania. In 2011, she was appointed as the Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Nigerian Women Trust Fund (NWTF) by the Federal Government.   She was listed in March 2012 as one of the 100 personalities working for the advancement of women and girls in the world. Her contribution to important national discourse was very key such that former President Goodluck Jonathan noticed her absence during a discussion about HIV/AIDS in Abuja when the former President asked: “Where is the wife of Ekiti State Governor? I enjoyed her contribution the last time she was here.” Prof Utomi described her as ‘a reputable feminist activist, Gender Specialist, Social Entrepreneur, Policy Advocate and writer, who has devoted her time, talent and resources to the promotion and defence of rights of women and the girl child’.   She has been doing this before her husband became Governor in October 2010 through her organization, the African Women Development Fund (AWDF) through which she has empowered many women groups especially widows across Africa. I have known her since January 2007, though my association with her husband who is second term governor of Ekiti State and now Chairman, Nigeria Governors’Forum (NGF), dated back to 1984 when we were both students at the University of Lagos. I later served as Senior Special Assistant on Research and Documentation to him during his first tenure between October 2010 and October 2014. Since I have known Erelu Bisi Fayemi, she has remained her pleasant and humble self.   During her first tenure as wife of the Governor, she made her impact felt in that administration through many life-lifting programmes such as the Multiple Birth Trust Fund to cater for the needs of couples who gave birth to twins or more children at a go; sponsored the gender based violence law and the Child Right Act in Ekiti State, established the Ekiti Development Foundation, an organisation she used to empower many Ekiti women and women organisations. She collaborated well with the Ministry of Women Affairs and her positive impact was felt on Ekiti women and children.   She embarked on a programme called Erelu mbe Oja wo ( Erelu visits markets ) where she interacted with the market women, gave them measuring bowls and wallets, bought ingredients from them and supported them financially. She gave 16 buses to the market women leaders in each of the 16 Local Government Areas. She supported many indigent women and offset the medical bills of many patients. She is behind the food bank project and soup kitchen with a Non-Governmental Organisation whereby elderly and indigent Ekiti citizens were provided with foodstuffs, both raw and cooked.   She has a pure heart and she is a cheerful giver who is kind to a fault. Bisi Fayemi was a pillar of support for many in the government of Fayemi at that time. She is a problem solver and humility personified. Like many other stakeholders in the first Fayemi government, she was devastated by the electoral loss on June 21, 2014 but she took it with equanimity and handled the post-election trauma in a matured way such that she came out stronger and played a more active role in the re-election of her husband on July 14, 2018. As she would reveal later, she was devastated not by the loss per se, but because of treachery from those she trusted and assisted during that administration.   Many of them turned their backs against her, castigated her and her husband for the electoral loss even when they knew more serious reasons for the loss ! Narrating her experience to me one evening after we were out of government, she exclaimed with disappointment in her voice, how people you trusted most could suddenly turn against you because you are no longer in position of power where you can dispense patronage. I instantly remembered the words of Bertha M. Clay in his novel, “Beyond Pardon” when he wrote, “There are many sorrows; the bitterness of death; the tortures of jealousy; the anguish of long suffering; but there is nothing that rends the heart, that destroys all hopes, that ruins a life so quickly as treachery from the one we love best”. Even though she was disappointed about betrayal from unexpected quarters, there was no bitterness in her heart. Perhaps the greatest attribute of this woman of virtue is her forgiving spirit and her large heart. She embraced and forgave many of those who betrayed her in the first tenure and moved on. In fact, she influenced the present appointment of many of them in this present dispensation. She will always say in Yoruba, ‘e woo ta baa gbagbe oro ana, a o ni ‘reni ba sere mon (Look, if we don’t let by gone be byegone, we won’t have any friends left).   This special attribute shocked and drew many to her, who had thought she would adopt the an-eye-for-an-eye approach when against all odds, Fayemi won election for his second tenure and she also automatically commenced her second tenure as the first lady. During the electioneering campaign between May and July 2018, Bisi Fayemi led other women in an elaborate road show and visited almost all farmsteads in the state to campaign for her husband just as she did in 2014 when seeking re-election. She has intimidating credentials yet, she is as gentle as a dove and humility personified.   She had received standing ovation on the floor of the General Assembly (UNO) for her efforts through the AWDF to make life better for African women. She is until recently, a UN Women Nigeria Senior Advisor, and is a Visiting Senior Research Fellow at the Africa Leadership Centre, King’s College, London. Bisi Fayemi is the author of Loud Whispers (2017), a masterpiece which I was privileged to review and recommend for all secondary schools, Speaking for Myself (2013), and an autobiography,Speaking above a Whisper (2013). She also co-edited Voice, Power and Soul. She is a motivational speaker who has delivered many public lectures including the recent convocation lecture of the University of Medical Sciences , Ondo. Bisi Fayemi holds many traditional titles like Erelu of Isan Kingdom, Iyalode of Ilemeso, Yeye Ajiseye of Awo-Ekiti and Ochiora of Umezi Owa, Enugu State.   As we celebrate this woman of substance, we in Ekiti are proud to call her our own and we thank God for sparing her life till this day. We wish her Happy Birthday and many more prosperous years of service to humanity. Rt Hon Hakeem Jamiu is the Deputy Speaker, Ekiti State House of Assembly. He wrote from Ado Ekiti. Living Lagom in Sweden: An Interview With Lola Akerstrom
Tumblr media
Back in 2006, during my first trip around the world, I met a Swedish girl. We traveled together for a bit and the following year I went to visit her in Sweden. Though that relationship didn’t last, my love for Sweden did and, in subsequent years, I learned Swedish and even tried to move to Sweden. I love everything Swedish. And so does my friend Lola. Lola and I met back in 2008 when travel blogging was in its infancy. Unlike me, she’s had success in making a life in Sweden, where she now lives with her husband and son. She’s one of the favorite people in the industry and I love the imagery in her writing and the beauty in her photography.
In her new book, Lagom, she discusses life in Sweden and Swedish culture. Today, I jealously interview her about life there.
Nomadic Matt: Tell everyone a bit about yourself. Lola: I’m a Nigerian-born, US-educated, Sweden-based writer and photographer focusing mostly on exploring culture through food, tradition, and lifestyles. My photography is represented by National Geographic Creative, and I was recently awarded the prestigious 2018 Travel Photographer of the Year Bill Muster Award from the Society of American Travel Writers (SATW).
I actually took a nontraditional path to this new life, as I worked as a web programmer and GIS system architect for 12+ years before the full career shift into the travel media industry.
I’ve always been fascinated by the nuances of culture: what makes us different and what our similarities are. And so this curiosity and acknowledgement really underpins pretty much all my work as a travel writer and photographer.
Tumblr media
How did you end up in Sweden? I met my husband in 2006 while living in the US. After logging thousands upon thousands of air miles, as well as temporary stints in Stockholm, I officially moved over in 2009. It really was an intercultural, interracial, and intercontinental union in many ways. We now have two kids, so Sweden will be home for a while for many reasons, the prime one being that it’s pretty darn perfect for families.
How do you find life in Sweden? Good? Bad? Life in Sweden is what you make of it, and that’s why I also wrote this book — as a handy cultural guide that can help you integrate and deeply understand Swedish culture and its nuances. Having lived in both Nigeria and the US for extended periods of time, I appreciate living here with a young family. Overall, the quality of life is fantastic in terms of stress levels. There is enough time to dedicate to the family, as well as generous benefits, which we all contribute to through our taxes.
What’s your least favorite part about living in Sweden? I often say Sweden is the most open society run by the most private people, and I explain why in the book. Sweden does have its dark sides, and I always say the main difference is this: I can be like Oprah Winfrey if I want to as a black woman in the US, despite all the racial tensions. In Sweden, while you’ll be left in a small corner to live your happy life, trying to be a CEO or magnate like Oprah is a gargantuan task. There are people who still don’t get called for job interviews because of the names on their résumés. So overall, while I love living here, no society is perfect, and Sweden has a lot of integration issues it needs to work out.
Why did you write this book? So, the Swedish word lagom has recently emerged as the lifestyle trend of 2017 and of course, publishers are jumping on it with different lifestyle books — from recipes to interior decor.
Tumblr media
But I needed to put a book out there that was beyond cinnamon bun recipes, because lagom is not a word that is warmly embraced or even liked by many Swedes themselves for various reasons, including the fact the ethos has over time morphed to denote average, boring, and middle-of-the-road. I detail all this in the book, as well as explain why lagom itself is inherently a good ideal as opposed to jante, which is the negative parasitic ethos that attaches itself to lagom and brings the negativity. But it is the key to understanding the Swedish mindset.
I have been living in Sweden for eight years, and writing about the country and its culture for even longer. I am also married to a Swede and have a unique vantage point of observing the culture both objectively and subjectively. So I explain lagom in a way that a foreigner fully gets it, as well as holding up a mirror to Swedes so they see how lagom is expressed in interactions with other people. It can be very difficult to write about something that’s very intrinsic to you in a way that others can fully understand without coming off as patronizing and condescending.
It really governs the Swedish psyche, and individual bubbles of lagom are definitely changing and morphing with each passing generation.
I needed to write a well-balanced cultural book that could still stand once the Scandi-trends wave washed over.
What does lagom mean and why is it important? On the surface, lagom is often described as “not too little, not too much, just right,” but it’s a lot more nuanced than that and lies closer to “optimal.” It is the key to unlocking the Swedish psyche and governs almost all aspects of life and culture in the country.
It also transforms its meaning in different contexts — from “less is more” in terms of décor and “moderation” in terms of food to “harmony and balance” in terms of society and “mindfulness” in terms of well-being.
If one were to boil down the true essence of lagom to its very core, it means striving for the ultimate balance in life that, when applied to all aspects of one’s existence, can help guide you toward operating at your most natural, effortless state.
The state and measurement of lagom mean different things to different folks. My satisfaction may vary from yours, but we can both be satisfied. Lagom represents the ultimate sweet spot or golden mean in your own life, and more importantly, it encourages you to fully operate within that sweet spot that’s just right for you.
Tumblr media
For travelers to Sweden, how can they detect lagom at work or play? Many people often describe Swedes (in Sweden, not outside of Sweden) as reserved, inaccessible, and maybe even cold and flippant, but it’s often just lagom’s mindfulness at play. Locals will give you your space and ensure you’re not inconvenienced by their presence. So, Swedes naturally keep their distance from a place of mindfulness, not because they don’t want to be around you. (Outside of Sweden, they are quick to ditch lagom in social settings.)
At work, lagom is always looking for the best solution, so there’s a lot of planning, lots of meetings, lots of consensus, lots of teamwork, you get the gist… to make sure they arrive at the optimal, lagom solution to all problems.
For example: Many foreigners working or doing business in Sweden often lament the amount of time Swedes put into upfront planning and preparation. Agendas are triple-checked, and several meetings are called to plan every single item on said agendas. Plans can take months to put in place before moving to the next step of implementing each item on those plans.
For a culture that prides itself on efficiency, it could seem these inherent acts of zealous planning are counterproductive, and they can be seen as wasting time and resources. However, because lagom craves balance by trimming excess around its edges, it requires adequate planning. “Adequate” is measured by whatever it takes to prune irrelevance, regardless of how long it takes.
To be efficient means to perform and function in the most optimal manner possible with the least waste of time, resources, and energy. This very definition of efficiency mirrors the core of lagom.
So lagom says it is perfectly OK to spend as much time as needed to prepare ourselves and strongly develop our plans, because that’s the only way we can guarantee efficiency.
Tumblr media
For travelers who would like to date a Swede, how can understanding lagom help them? Swedes don’t naturally divulge information or overshare, so sometimes it can be hard to even gauge or assess what’s going on in a relationship. And it’s not a culture that overly gesticulates with hands or uses flattering words, so knowing if a Swede is interested in you can be denoted by their unusually prolonged eye contact.
So, when out on a date, always have follow-up questions to keep the conversation going and to avoid your date awkwardly ending at “yes or no” answers. Because they will do so, in an effort not to overshare without being asked.
For someone going on a date expecting to be lavishly wined and dined, Swedes are generally conditioned to split their bills, to always repay favors, and to not be duty-bound to anyone, especially financially, by keeping that scale balanced. So this can come as a nasty surprise at the end of the night if you haven’t discussed it before the waiter brings out the menu.
And if you’re in relationship with a Swede and have issues or questions, just ask straight out because Swedes are very direct. And be prepared for those direct answers!
Why are people so fascinated with Sweden? I think a lot of the fascination comes from the quality of life and just how progressive the society is. Another more superficial angle has to do with physicality — from people and landscapes to interior décor and architecture. I mean, the city of Stockholm itself is absolutely stunning, and it spreads across 14 islands, which you can view from some nice vantage points in town. Sweden consistently ranks in the top 10 happiest countries, so there are clearly things Sweden is getting right.
What’s the one thing you want people to take away from your book? Lagom is a mindset that fundamentally battles stress. Having too much or too little causes stress, so lagom tries to find its balance between both with the optimal solution by reducing excess. Not perfection, but the best solution.
Think of it as a scale that always needs to be balanced. Too much or too little tips the scale sharply to one side or the other, so lagom balances itself (“just right”) by trimming excess and getting rid of all sources of stress within our control — from material things to relationships that drain us.

Essay 3- "Good Hair"
“Too dark”. That's the phrase most dark skin girls become acclimated with before they reach adolescence. Before we become conscious of our own identity, we become aware of something bigger; colorism. This is the notion that somehow the variant of brown an individual is somehow lifts them above others in the same ethnicity. This sentiment is born out of years of slavery and systematic oppression. The fruit of racism and self hate is colorism. When Europeans made colonies around the world, they implemented caste systems. This is true in almost all parts of the world including India, Jamaica, South America, etc. These caste systems would oftentimes set the lighter skinned above the darker skinned people, favoring them. As they implemented racism in physical world, it took on a form. Internal discriminations came out of this external hate. This is turn had countless effects specifically politically, economically and socially.  It’s effects can be observed in the social sense as Colorism doesn't just damage esteem individually. It digs deeper as it fosters discrimination within one’s own people. This crippling phenomenon is widespread. From the Ivory Coast of West African to the southern hills in India, It seems that in the world the darkest people are socially prosecuted. Growing up in Nigeria, on every store window, there were  advertisements for whitening cream. According to the World 1 Health Organisation (WHO), “77 percent of women in Nigeria use skin-lightening products”. This is a staggering number as it suggests that almost ¾ of the women in Nigeria have altered their skin tone. Furthermore this number is 59% in Togo and 36% in South Africa, according to 2 a study done by University of Cape Town in 2013. It’s not uncommon to see the use of these creams within one’s own family. I remember being 13 and hearing constantly; “Soon  you can start using the creams you getting too dark”. How ludicrous is it that in the Birthplace of mankind, the continent of Africa, there exists such hatred for melanin. This is only further fostered by Tv, media outlets, where there's less of a representation of a dark skinned black woman than any other race. Young girls grow up never seeing another representation of 1 Angus, Haaniyah. "The Biracial Aesthetic: Colorism and Hollywood. – Haaniyah Angus – Medium." Medium. July 23, 2018. Accessed November 04, 2018.  2 Angus, Haaniyah. "The Biracial Aesthetic: Colorism and Hollywood. – Haaniyah Angus – Medium." Medium. July 23, 2018. Accessed November 04, 2018.  themselves. When they are represented, its in relation to something negative, in the likes of drug addicts and short temperament in the eyes of the media. As seen in most movies made in the last decade, the usual portrayal of a black couple was a light skin women and a darker man. This same phenomenon can be seen in the casting of black people in general. Actress Viola Davis 3 declares “I have been given a lot of roles that are downtrodden, mammy-ish” on the subject of the lack of positive connotations surrounding dark skin women in the media.   Politically, these systems caused turmoil as oftentimes it became part of a voting demographic. For instance, in the case of the Rwandan Genocide, the Hutu and Tutsi were two of the same ethnic background. The only thing that separated these two groups were the Tutsis supposed “eurocentric features” which included thinner noses, lighter skin, etc. and the Hutus’ darker features. However, due to European classifications based on colorism and superficial 4 distinctions, they had emerged as two groups. This transpired into a real resentment within the two groups that later led to the genocide in 1994-95 that took the lives of approximately a million people. Moreover the consequences of such any system that seeks to separate people by skin color causes detriment to that society in ways politically by forcing individuals to pick a side based on such a fickle construct. These factors contribute to the tensions within a society. Diversity is not a bad thing but the maladaptive type of focus on the diversity causes turmoil.    Economically, as caste systems evolve and take on new forms, it widens the gaps. Before the era of Transatlantic slavery at the hands of the European, race and color was not usually an indicator of monetary wealth or status. As their colonial sentiments seeped into the lives of the natives, the notion of colorism permeated as well. This marginalized a group of people as it left most dark skinned people in a place of poverty and lower tier employment. In a study by Margaret Hunter Department of Sociology and Anthropology, Mills College it was noted “In fact, light-skinned people earn more money, complete more years of schooling, live in better neighborhoods, and marry higher-status people than darker-skinned people of the same race or 3 "Colorism in Hollywood." The Odyssey Online. December 18, 2017. Accessed November 04, 2018.  4 "How Colonialism Affected the Rwandan Genocide." Umuvugizi. August 16, 2011. Accessed November 04, 2018.  ethnicity”. Its obvious as to how this truths of our society can manifest in an inferiority complex amongst the victims as they scramble to attain a certain standard. On the other hand, as the use of these lightening creams increased, so did the likelihood of skin cancers, Within most of these 5 lightening creams, there's many harmful ingredients such as Hydroquinone and Mercury. Hydroquinone kills the melanocytes of the skin perpetually and Mercury is a known neurotoxin. Effects include insomnia, delirium, depression, etc. This in turn contributes to the general well being as more people find themselves at the mercy of these creams and therefore contributing to the cost of the country's health care. In many countries such as the EU, the distribution of Mercury is illegal. However, the manufacturing is sanctioned so the exportation is the only practice. This is proof that oftentimes, these governments are well aware of the health concerns around these creams but allow the manufacturing as long as the victims are outside the country. So at the expense of the quality of  lives of many, this enterprise of whitening creams are racking up mass profit. India is said to have consumed 233 tonnes in 2012, of lightening creams, according to the World Health Organization. Lastly, The business of whitening creams is booming, and that might be the source of official reluctance from government officials to cramp down on them.  In conclusion, The effects of colorism can be observed socially, politically and economically. This association that white is good and black is bad has been around for generations. This isn't a coincidence as its conditioned into most of us from a very young age. From Bedtime stories like the “The Black Swan” that pits a dark ugly duck against his white beautiful swans, to even stories like Snow White that depict a “fair” protagonist against a malevolent power dressed in all black. It seems like all through literature specifically, there’s this constant theme of darkness whiteness associated with grace. Why is it that in most stories we tell our children, we almost subconsciously subject them to this same conditioning as well. This is part of western education as well. As a person of a colonized group, this is a sign of the colonization that took place generations before me. Colorism promotes an olden sense of Eruropen superiority that was rampant during colonial times. In recent years, there’s been efforts 5 "The Shocking Cancer Effects of Skin Bleaching." The Shocking Cancer Effects of Skin Bleaching - The Point Newspaper, Banjul, The Gambia. Accessed November 04, 2018.  to “decolonize” and reverse the effects of a traditional colonial construct. However, these efforts seem almost futile as most people sweep the problem of colorism under the rug. It’s rarely discussed as its part of a bitter truth that lends its history to one of degradation and slavery.  This is why the likelihood of this unfortunate epidemic is in correlation with western influence and perpetration of an inferiority complex among the victims. With all these in mind, it begs the question of if the age of colonialism ever ended.      References: Angus, Haaniyah. "The Biracial Aesthetic: Colorism and Hollywood. – Haaniyah Angus – Medium." Nomadic Matt: Tell everyone a bit about yourself.

I’ve always been fascinated by the nuances of culture: what makes us different and what our similarities are. And so this curiosity and acknowledgement really underpins pretty much all my work as a travel writer and photographer.
How did you end up in Sweden? I met my husband in 2006 while living in the US. It really was an intercultural, interracial, and intercontinental union in many ways.

Living Lagom in Sweden: An Interview With Lola Akerstrom

Living Lagom in Sweden: An Interview With Lola Akerstrom
